Introduction
The Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme, introduced in the Union Budget 2025-26 by Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman Ji, is a transformative initiative aimed at democratising education through linguistic inclusivity. With India’s linguistic diversity spanning 22 officially recognised languages and hundreds of dialects, the scheme seeks to bridge the language gap in education by providing digital textbooks and study materials in regional languages for schools and higher education institutions.
This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises mother-tongue-based education to enhance comprehension and academic performance. By leveraging technology, the scheme addresses systemic barriers faced by students from non-English and non-Hindi backgrounds, particularly in rural and remote areas. It also complements existing efforts like the ASMITA initiative (Augmenting Study Materials in Indian Languages through Translation and Academic Writing), which aims to produce 22,000 books in Indian languages over five years.
